Brigadeiros & me

The history of this delicious chocolate treat

Brigadeiro (Bree-gah-day-roh) is a delicious chocolate treat that became popular in Brazil during a Presidential Election in the 1940's.

They were available at every event or party and it became part of my childhood. I grew up not only savoring but also making them with my mom back home.

A few years ago I made a batch of Brigadeiros for my friends and family and after receiving many compliments I decided to bring a piece of Brazilian culture to America in the shape of a little ball of chocolate.

The Beans

Did you know that the fruit of the cacao tree grows directly from the trunk. They look like small melons and the pulp inside contains 20 to 50 seeds or beans. It takes 5 years for a cacao tree to produce its first seed pods. It takes about 400 beans to make a pound of cocoa.

Cacao beans, especially when eaten raw, are some of the most high-antioxidant rich foods around thanks to the phytonutrients available in cacao nibs, helping absorb free radicals which can cause damage to the body.
